Did you know that August is National Road Victim Month? Road safety is important for so many reasons, but primarily because it can involve anyone, from the driver to the passengers to those in other cars and people on the street. As we remember the victims of road accidents and the families they left behind, we’re also here to help you #BeSmartGetPrepared with some essential road safety reminders.
Following simple rules can keep you out of complicated situations.
Simple rules like wearing your seatbelt, staying in the right lane, and making signals when needed can not only save you the trouble of getting a ticket but may actually save your life and the lives of others on the road.
Rest when you need to.
This doesn’t just go for long distance drives. If you’re on the road and you feel like you need to pull over, just do so and rest as much as you need to. Grab a cup of coffee if you can or switch with another driver if you’re travelling with a group. Don’t force yourself to stay on the road just because you think you’re almost there.
Don’t use your phone while driving.
Whether you’re replying to a text or to Snapchat something funny you passed by, looking at your phone while you’re driving can prove fatal. Keep your eyes on the road and pull over if you need to check your phone.
Don’t drive (or let someone inebriated drive) under the influence.
Driving under the influence is one of the leading causes of road accidents. In 2015, 10,265 people died in alcohol-impaired driving crashes, accounting for nearly one-third (29%) of all traffic-related deaths in the United States.
Carry an emergency roadside kit.
As much as we’d all like to avoid getting into accidents on the road, some situations just can’t be avoided. Be smart, get prepared, and make sure you keep and emergency roadside kit in your car. The Be Smart Get Prepared emergency roadside kit is a Nylon carry bag packed that fits easily in a vehicle trunk or truck bed and includes items such as a smart flash with a blinker to alert other motorists, screwdrivers, ponchos, and first aid essentials. You can order it here.
