With summer in full swing, it’s all too easy to get carried away and forget the health and safety risks at hand! Time to brush up on some summer fun safety reminders!
Be wary of bugs.
Summer’s a great time to enjoy the outdoors, but that also exposes you to a higher possibility of getting insect bites and stings. Be sure to apply insect repellent before heading out and cleaning out damp areas or containers of stagnant water around the house.
Be watchful in the water.
Swimming may be a staple summer activity, but it’s still a major safety consideration. Never let children or other inexperienced swimmers left unwatched in the water. If you’re at the pool, avoid running on wet surfaces around it to lessen the chances of someone slipping and falling. If in open water, be on the lookout for strong currents.
Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.
Speaking of water, be sure to fill up on it! Heat exhaustion can be dangerous, especially if it develops into a heat stroke. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include weakness, heavy sweating, a weak but faster pulse, nausea, clammy skin, and fainting.
Be on the lookout for markers that this is developing into a heat stroke: a fever, a rapid and strong pulse, loss of consciousness, and hot, red, dry, or moist skin. If you spot any of these signs, applying ice packs to areas in the body where blood flows close to the surface can help the body cool down faster.
Be ready to treat burns.
Turning up the heat in the summer can be fun, but it can also be especially dangerous! From fireworks to barbecues to extra sun time, it’s all too easy for your skin to get burned. Be sure to apply sunscreen if you’re heading out in the day, and to follow all fire-related safety instructions in case an activity calls for it. In case of a burn, run the area under cool water before applying a burn cream or ointment. You can also loosely bandage the area.
Have your safety supply all stocked up.
